Asbestos Testing
Asbestos is a substance known to cause cancer. In fact, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have all classified asbestos as a known human carcinogen. Asbestos is a naturally occurring group of minerals consisting of flexible, fire resistant fibers. When asbestos is disturbed, the tiny fibers can accumulate in the lungs after being inhaled, causing a serious health risk. Risk of asbestos related disease can depend on the level and extent of exposure. However, asbestos is rarely used alone, and when combined with other materials that have strong bonding agents, asbestos is generally safe. Asbestos can be found in many products. Materials used for heat and acoustic insulation, roofing, flooring, and fire proofing may contain asbestos. If asbestos containing material in your home is damaged or you have a planned home improvement project that will disturb it, you will need the assistance of a professional for repairs or removal. Where does Neighbors Home Inspections (NHI) come in? If you are unsure asbestos containing materials are present in your home, we highly recommend asbestos testing be performed.
